La modulación en banda ultra ancha (ultra wide band, UWB) está empezando a preponderar en la industria de redes inalabricas. Inicialmente usada sólo para aplicaciones militares, esta tecnologáa está por ser lanzada al mercado. UWB usa una potencia muy baja (low power) y señales de radio de pulsos cortos (short-pulse radio signals) del orden de los picosegundos, para transferir datos en un extenso rango de frecuencias. Una transmisión UWB implica billones de pulsos repartidos en unos cuantos gigahertz. El receptor correspondiente traduce los pulsos en datos escuchando la secuencia enviada por el transmisor.
